U.S. Birth Rate Continues to Fall

Orange County, CA - May 22nd, 2019 -  According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States birth rate is continuing to fall. In 2018, the birth rate hit an all-time low.

There were 59 births per 1,000 US women between 15 and 44 in 2018, which is 2 percent lower than the in 2017, making 2018 the lowest rate since the government started tracking birth rates in the year 1909.

U.S. Birth Rate Continues to Fall

In most cases, birth rates have declined for women under the age of 35, particularly for women in their early 20s. However, the birth rate slightly increases for women 35 to 44.

Additionally, the teen birth rate among females between 15 and 19 also fell 7 percent between 2017 and 2018, to about 17 birth out of 1000 teens. “Even though the Great Recession technically ended in 2009, people may still feel uneasy about their economic situation; they may be employed but working part-time, or going to school and working, or trying to pay off student loans. People feel just really uncertain about the future,” said Karen Benjamin Guzzo, associate director of the Center for Family & Demographic Research at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, in an interview.

All in all, the report is not able to determine the reason for the overall decline, but it could be the uncertainty of the future.
